Kappa Sigma History
Kappa Sigma has a rich and varied history. The spirit of Kappa Sigma dates back to 1400. A Greek scholar named Manuel Chrysoloras at the University of Bologna in Italy founded a society for mutual protection against harassment and attacks by the governor of Bologna, Baldassarre Cossa.
It was with the spirit of Chrysoloras that the five founders founded Kappa Sigma here in America. At the University of Virginia, William Grigsby McCormick, George Miles Arnold, Frank Courtney Nicodemus, Edmund Law Rogers, and John Covert Boyd met in McCormick's room on the night of December 10, 1869 and founded Kappa Sigma.
Over the next years, Kappa Sigma slowly started to grow. However, it was not until the initiation of Stephen Alonzo Jackson that the Fraternity reached its peak. Jackson almost single-handedly transformed the Kappa Sigma from a small local Fraternity into a huge national one. Because of all his work towards the Fraternity, Jackson has become known as the "Golden Hearted Virginian." Today, due in part to Jackson's efforts, Kappa Sigma has over 215 chapters and 20 colonies all over the world. There are also currently over 40 alumni chapters. Since Kappa Sigma's founding there has been over 250,000 initiates.
This Alpha Delta chapter of Kappa Sigma was founded on January 8th, 1892 by six men. They were Hugh Stewart Taylor, Arthur George Guyer, Milton Speer McDowell, William Powell Rothrock, Mark Truman Swartz, and Walter Blair Waite.
Alpha Delta was re-colonized in Spring, 2007. On April 28, 2007, Alpha Delta was officially colonized with sixty-two members. The colony members were: Alex Arrigo, Alex Fatica, Ali Soheilian, Andy Cline, Ben Froats, Bill Larkin, Brenton Surak, Brett Rhodes, Chuck Marks, Chris Micklos, Chris Tang, DJ Shanks, Drew Burt, Ed Torres, Eric Marcano, Erick Fisco, Greg Cooke, Hank Steadman, Jack Hagarty, Jake Kiehlmeier, Jason Liebel, Jeff Kristan, Jeff Watson, Jeremy Markey, Jesse Kozaczki, Johnny Siefert, Jon Orr, Jon Tonda, Josh Gehly, Josh Mukina, Josh Velez, Josh Will, Josh Kerr, Justin Mottilla, Kelsey Britton, Ken Reese, Lyms Satine, Matt Hardock, Matt Urian, Mike Caparelli, Mike Doyle, Mike Gales, Nick Corradetti, Ricardo Ospino, Rich Thompson, Rob Giacomelli, Robby Pearsall, Ross Konell, Ryan Eichenlaub, Scott Jacobs, Scott Wengrenovich, Scott Wilkinson, Sean Pender, Shane Murphy, Stefan Pancoe, Steve Aloia, Steve Bilo, Steve Bowers, Steve Cullison, Steve Jaklic, Tom Weir, and Zac Kuchta.
